How to write an article that sells? We know what it’s like to pour your blood, sweat, and tears into a new blog post.

It takes time to write a blog post. But sometimes it takes an even longer time to figure out what to write and to do all the keyword research.

Usually, this is not the case for beginners.

Most of the time, they just race to create as many articles as possible without doing much research and optimization. Maybe you even dumped some serious coin on graphic design for your website.

Perhaps that was your go-to content marketing plan. You even got lucky and got tons of traffic, hoping all those visitors will convert into clients. You expected this to be your gold mine.

But then?

Crickets, your blog is not working, it may be gaining some traffic, but then nothing happens. You don’t see any additional sales or conversions.

These days, tons of businesses, big and small, are taking advantage of blogs to make sales. Some companies invest hundreds of thousands of dollars each month in content, you know.

#1 It’s Story Time

The number one hack is, it’s storytime. I mean it, everyone loves stories, right?

One of the biggest hang-ups entrepreneurs face writing articles is they incorrectly assume anyone can just plop down and bang out a few hundred words on a topic. But writing takes a little more skill than that. And maybe you’re not the sharpest scribe, but if you’re human, you’re a storyteller, trust me.

When I started writing a few years ago, I was terrible. Couldn’t write anything decent. Even now, my English grammar is terrible, and my vocabulary is low. But what I’ve learned is how to tell stories. This helps me to write engaging articles that people read. That’s our first big hack to writing compelling articles.

You need to tell a story.

Alex Turnbull, at GrooveHQ, who is one of the most successful marketing bloggers out there, did a study that found that posts with storytelling led to 300% more readers. And not only did these people read the posts, but a whopping 520% more people were also scrolling all the way to the bottom of the page.

That’s what we call a hook.

Now here’s what we recommend.

Inject your blog post with a personal story.

Maybe you made an unexpected discovery about your product or idea that happened in a humorous or inspiring way. Maybe you literally use some stories with helpful advice from experts or famous people.

Mark Cuban’s morning routine, or Benjamin Franklin’s to-do list, you get the picture.

#2 Edit, Edit, Edit

This hack goes without saying and really applies to any kind of writing. You must do whatever you can to reduce your article into its purest form.

You don’t want any fluff. While the debate over content length to sales conversion is always ongoing, one thing remains, do not jam up readers with unnecessary information. Don’t forget, these readers are in the midst of browsing the internet. You need to be lightning-fast but also thorough.

Which is, the actual length of the article versus fluff doesn’t always correspond. You can have a long article that’s all meat and no fat. That’s the sweet spot.

In fact, while you want to reduce any and all unnecessary information, research proves that longer articles help sell. For whatever reason, studies prove that longer articles appear more thought out, more comprehensive, and in turn, more trustworthy.

These articles get shared and lead to conversions.

One quick micro hack for cutting the fluff is to keep a solid outline for your article, including just the good stuff. Then as you re-read your finished article draft.

Ask yourself this question: Was this idea in my outline?

If not, you can probably go ahead and cut that out. Also, as you know, Google is always working on improving its search algorithms, and the most important thing for Google right now is user behavior.

They track all users and see if their user experience on your blog post was great. They look at many factors, but two of them are these, they look at the time spent and also at another factor, like, is this user is going to continue searching and trying to find another article on this topic after they read yours. Or are they done?

If they are done searching, this means that your article solved their question or the problem that visitors had.

This is great.

The more time they spend on your article and the more of them will find their answers, the better your ranking is going to be.

#3 Be a Problem Solver

Like any good entrepreneur, you probably already know what’s at the heart of your calling. You’re trying to offer solutions to a problem, right?

Well, that same theory should extend to your articles.

Remember what I just said about Google algorithms?

They are looking for problem solvers; this is a win-win game for them. The more problems you are going to solve, the better for you and for Google.

Naturally, you’re at an advantage. Tons of people, if not most, are on the internet want to find solutions to their problems. Whether they need a good place to eat, a new way to organize their small business finances, or is just trying to find something entertaining.

They are using the internet to find an answer. And if your article is going to answer their questions better and faster. Google will figure this out, and eventually, of course, this will take time, you will start getting more visitors.

Whenever you want to write your next piece, this should be the first question you ask.

How is what I’m going to write will solve someone’s problem?

If you have an answer, you’re ready to jump into an article. If not, store that idea away for later and move into the next problem and solution.

If your article has the answers, there’s a way higher chance you’re going to grab someone’s attention, and they may share it, with their friends or on social media, and they may buy your product.

Anytime you go to write an article, think really hard about that big question. Before you know it, you’ll start racking up an entire blog. Not just filled with interesting articles but with valuable solutions, that’s the key.

#4 Call To Action

Sometimes even the best articles miss this important closer. Not every article is going to have a call to action, but if you’re ever looking to promote a certain event or guide your visitors to the next step, then you’re going to want to bank on this hack.

A call to action or CTA is sort of like closing the deal. It tells readers what to do next and often allows them to interact with your content.

Imagine you’ve told your story, and you’ve told it without any unnecessary fluff, and now you need people to check out a page or sign up for an event. The CTA is the key to getting your visitors much closer to a sale. These calls to action are especially important on social media where comments, likes, or sharing posts are essential to spreading the word and making your article count.

If you’ve done your job well and you’ve written a strong article, readers want to hear from you. They want to know what they can do next. And don’t be afraid to ask them, like I’m going to ask you now to comment below or subscribe to my newsletter. It’s not gimmicky, and most marketing studies prove it’s essential to making those conversations.

#5 Give Them Value

This important hack goes to the core of what many of our hacks were about in today’s article. Quality content is the key to building up a strong blog.

Content marketing only works if you’re putting in the effort and providing tons of value. People are so savvy on the internet today and are so used to the barrage of ads and other quick marketing schemes; they can sniff them right out.

Of course, an article can be different. It can provide an answer to something and provide it well. Avoid the cliche clickbait titles.

They don’t sustain like you think they do if they aren’t backed up by quality content.

Make sure you deliver in the article, what you’ve promised in your headline.

Or over-deliver, this is even better.

If you can consistently give readers articles that have value, you’ve quickly built up loyalty and trust, and this built-in loyal base.

A big following on the blog is a dream for marketers. You might be asking; how do I know if I’m giving them value? It’s simple, just stick to the truth. Use facts and research to back up what you’re saying. Be compelling and honest, and everything will fall into place.
